Toupees would be the analogous hairpiece for the balding male and are available in a variety of colors with the appropriate percentage of gray hair to match the patient’s state of canities.
Natural part line toupees, which add a small insert of sheer plastic in the part line to expose the natural color of the underlying scalp, may create a more natural appearance. Some toupees come uncut, allowing the patient to take the toupee to the barber for styling along with the patient’s natural hair.
However, attachment of toupees to the scalp remains poor, relying on clips or adhesives. The clips are placed around the periphery of the hairpiece and allow attachment to the remaining scalp hair.
Unfortunately,the toupee and the attachment clips can result in further hair loss due to breakage and traction alopecia.
