Essential Oils \ Menthol Shampoo recommendations (Topicals & Shampoos)

Hi, ive been reading this forum and a number of posts recommend an essential oils shampoo with menthol to stimulate blood flow. Would anyone know a specific brand name I should be looking for, as none of the posts have mentioned any. I have looked on google and found 'Head & Shoulders Natural Menthol' shampoo. Is this the one people on here use? Im currently on a Piroctone Olamine shampoo (from the body shop) and would like to alternate with an essential oils/menthol shampoo.

Any help most appreciated.

Cheers, V

What you will find is that alot of Piroctone Olamine shampoos are good, even they can be a little harsh on the scalp for daily use. I use one isnt that harsh but combining your shampoo with an Essential oil is a good idea.

You can try an oil similar to that of the Essential oil topical used in the scottish study or use a good essential oil conditioner and perhaps rotate with any Peppermint shampoo to give blood flow a boost!

Thanks for that. Are there any off-the-shelf ready made products that you recommend or are currently using with regards to essential oils conditioner / peppermint shampoo?

I did look at the study you mentioned and they said they use 4 oils: thyme, lavender, rosemary and cedarwood. I could just as well find a conditioner base and add these oils to it. I could also add peppermint oil to the mix and have all 5 oils in it. That way I could use my piroctone olamine shampoo and the 5 oils conditioner each day. Does that sound reasonable? Are there any other oils recommended to the mix?

The study also mentions they use jojoba and grapeseed oil as a carrier. Are these required in the mix? My guess is no. The essential oils are all we are concerned with.

Aside from that, it would be great to know what products you use in your regime. I have sourced out a place here that sells essential oils/base shampoos and conditioners. Will look into it.

Thanks again.

This is a basic easily sourced PTO shampoo:

http://www.loreal-paris.co.uk/haircare/men/elvive-anti-dandruff/normal-to-greasy-hair.aspx

I dont actually use an exclusive essential oil topical as I use a topical which contains those ingredients aswell as others. I have just actually restarted it again!

I wouldnt dilute the original formula too much - try a Peppermint shampoo instead.

Ive listed a shampoo and Ive restarted Calosol.

To reduce hairloss further you may want to improve your lifestyle via using a few things; lecithin, pantothenic acid and chromium.

If yo have any questions regarding topicals Dr Y is answering them in the TOPICAL forum.

Thanks for all the info. I will aim for a rotation between a Piroctone Olamine and peppermint shampoo and an essential oils conditioner. By chance I came across a shampoo and conditioner made locally here in Australia which contains the following:

-----
Pure Organic Essential Oils of Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Thyme, Lavender, Lemon, Spanish Sage & Clary Sage and Pure Natural Plant Extracts of Horsetail, Sage, Nettle, Ginseng & Vitamin A & Pro Vitamin B5 will purify and rebalance your hair & scalp, restores lustre and hydrates dry and damaged hair, adds sheen and body to your hair.
-----

It's got everything... I might pick up both the conditioner and shampoo and trial it out, rotating it with my Body Shop Ginger shampoo.

Both the shampoo and conditioner contain the same ingredients as I listed above. They can be sourced from this Australian website:

http://www.healthandhappiness.com.au/site/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images.tpl&product_id=38&category_id=10&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=2

The products are called:
Peppermint Eucalyptus Dandruff Defense Shampoo
Peppermint Eucalyptus Dandruff Defense Conditioner

I got in touch with the owner. She didn't tell me anything in relation to the ratio and quantities of essential oils that she uses when making these products. So I am not sure how true they are to the Scottish study. I might order and see how they go. For $19 AUD for both the shampoo and conditioner, that seems relatively inexpensive.

I did get in contact with another company here in Australia. They made suggestions about putting together a conditioner that was somewhat faithful to the Scottish study. Their idea was to drop the carrier oils and just mix the 4 essential oils (+ peppermint if i wanted to) straight into their base conditioner. But they were suspect as to how the resultant product would smell. I guess this is the way healthandhappiness does it.

Whichever way I go, I will just use it as a normal conditioner/shampoo, and will not leave it in my hair overnight. Maybe later on I will change my routine and just use the essential oils + 2 x carrier oils and leave it in my hair as does the Scottish study. I just don't want too much fuss at this point in time.

cheers, V

p.s. I haven't as yet applied the essential oils straight to my hair.

Great!

What is needed now is a topical to encourage regrowth!

Id be very interested to see anybody who got some regrowth using a peppermint oil shampoo.

I tested peppermint oil/water at a roughly 1/40 or perhaps 1/50 concentration on one side of my chin (thick beard) for 3 months a couple of years ago. I got a -profound- reduction in beard hair where it was applied, with no inflammation. But it sure took the hair a -LONG- time to come back. It makes me wonder if there is something in peppermint that is damaging to hair period. I'd love for that ugly thought not to be true.

We -KNOW- that cedarwood, lavender, rosemary, and thyme are good for hair, due to that Scottish Essential Oils study and the great regrowth pic they had.

If there is anywhere you DONT want body hair, I couldn't recommend anything stronger than a peppermint oil/water mix. It will certainly suppress it.

It has merits - and may help as a scalp treat alongside a PTO shampoo.

I actually add organic peppermint essential oil to my shampoo on my own (i like my shampoo...it has copper peptides it in)
you don't necessarily need to buy one.

also i'm really into telling people about this new product i found that i'm getting results with. natural crown dot com. i think it may have some menthol as one of the ingredients, at least it smells minty so there probably is some even if it's not a main ingredient. so worth it, check it out.

i mean not like it's a magic bullet, but 10 to 20% regrowth, no shed, no side effects, so dry skin, good stuff.

good luck,

according to benji, Menthol/Peppermint don't have hair regrowth properties. I personally have tried T-Gel with menthol - I think they call it something like "...for Stuborn Itch control", and I've also used Selsun Blue with Menthol - both for 2-3 weeks. One thing I noticed is that both made my oily scalp even oilier - almost turning it into an oil rig. :-|
