How can allergan rep say possible scalp latisse avail by 2013???? (Hair Loss Research & Clinical Trials)

I don't get it. Phase 1 won't be done until September 2012 so phase 3 can't even start till then. The soonest phase 3 would be over is sometime in late 2013 - maybe fall 2013. Then you have to add months for the FDA to approve or not approve. We are looking at bimatoprost in 2014 is how I see it but the rep in this artical talks about 2013. Am I missing something?

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/w_MindBodyNews/latisse-eyelash-enhancer-thickens-thinning-hair/story?id=13536165

Still, it does look like bimatoprost will be avail by summer 2014 if it proves efficacy and safety. I think it will prove safety but efficay is the bigger issue. I hope it proves safe/effective in phase 2 and then the docs/pharmacists around the country may start concocting their own larger dose versions for the scalp. Latisse is not strong enough.

I don't know about this bimatoprost stuff.

It really sounds like the only thing it does is the same thing that Rogaine does: keep hair follicles in the growth phase longer.

That's why eyelashes get longer when it's used on eyelashes.

The only way it might be better than Rogaine, is if it can induce vellus hairs to keep growing until they become terminal hairs.

Then you would have something.

Otherwise you'll get results like Rogaine: a ten to twenty percent increase, which will eventually wear off.

I think the reason is because bimatroprost as a drug has already been approved (albeit for other indications) and the clinical trials in this case are just formalities, in a way. The long-term safety of the drug was already demonstrated when it was approved for GLAUCOMA. Therefore Allergan doesn't have to go through lengthy and exhaustive safety testing for the drug now.

Doctors can prescribe bimatoprost OFF-LABEL right now for hairloss.

The clinical trials we're looking at are just formalities.

If you really want bimatoprost convince someone to write you a prescription. It's just expensive.

But yes I don't see it how it can be available in 2013. But it could. Expedited review is only for real life saving drugs.

I have said enough times that it should have sunk in by now that latisse does not have a high enough concentration of bimatoprost. Eyelashes and scalp hair are two different things. We would need a stronger dose than that found in latisse. Allergan is testing two different doses for scalps. They are testing the same dose in latisse but they are also testing a significantly higer dose. I suspect that the higher dose will ultimately be the one that hits the market because it requires a stronger dose for scalp hair than the dose found in latisse. Now please stop suggesting I simply secure latisse.

I hope this finally sinks into that thick skull of yours.

It works for about 100% of eyelash patients but it will likely require a stronger dose for scalp hair. There is no point in using latisse on the scalp because it is not a high enough dose. Allergan is testing two doses for scalp hair. They are testing one dose that equals the dose in latisse but they are also testing a much higher dose. It is likely that it will take the higher dose for scalp hair.

I'm pretty sure at least one dermatoligist has some patients on latisse for scalp hair loss, and some or all of those patients have regrown some scalp hair.

I think I saw it as part of a report in an ABC news video on the net.

Yea but it's getting minoxidil like results at the lower (latisse) dose. That is why I want a higher dose. I am hoping and I believe that a higher dose will result in better results.

2013 is indeed a complete pipe dream. These pharma /biotech companies always b.s. their timelines. This will probably not even finish Phase III by the end of 2013.

Despite the "formality," the FDA doesn't fast track drugs like this for cosmetic purposes. They fast track drugs with serious indications.

They plan on finishing PHase II by the end of this year. There is no way they can recruit a Phase III, do the full trial, and have it approved by the FDA (which can take around 9 months in and of itself)before 2014.

I'm just hoping it's significantly better than minoxidil. This is not a magic bullet, but an improvement in the temple area / front hairline would be most welcome.

Cheers.

Dude- I've had the misfortune of reading a few of your other posts here, and they're filled with misinformation and insults to other members.

Your post questioning whether the maker of Latisse (the company is Allergan, by the way) has enough money to fund a Phase III trial says all I need to hear about you.

Dude - the company is loaded with cash. They are sitting on two blockbuster drugs with Botox and Latisse.

Now, stop insulting other quality posters who do indeed know a thing or two.

People like you should just be seen and not heard.

They have a plenty of money for PHase III. Now relax and don't get the trots over it.

I doubt it will be very effective, at best an advanced version of minox.

It does not solve androgenic degradation of HF's, by either reducing androgens or reducing HF sensitivity to androgens. Nor is this a treatment that's going to create new HF's like the second generation treatments like Follica or ARI.

But if it helps I'm all for it, but not something for us to get excited about.

And what do you base your theory on?

Do you base your theory on the fact that in virtually 100% of eyelash patients it grows as much eyelash hair as the patient wants? Is this what you base your theory on?

Or do you base your theory on a presumption that all treatments that do not involve cellular transplantation or growth factors can't possibly work just because today is sunday?

Brown iris pigmentation likely to be permanent

One side-effect of bimatoprost which is reportedly fairly common is increased brown iris pigmentation in the eyes. That is, if your eyes are, say, green, they could become more brown. If your eyes are hazel or lighter brown, they may turn black. Although Allergan reports this didn't happen to clinical trialists for Latisse...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bimatoprost

I think that this drug stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and in particular the microcapillaries, somewhat like Minodixil. But, the chemical structure is quite a bit different than Minoxidil, as are the peripheral effects.

It may be good at growing hair, but otherwise, it may have some weird side effects, so I'd say use it at your own risk.

Respectfully, you're probably the only poster here who would consider not using a treatment that works just because it will change your eye color. I'm not saying that disrespectfully because I understand that you're just trying to point out some facts, but I have brown eyes and I can assure everyone that having your eye color change to brown will not do any damage to a person's life. Hair loss has damaged my life profoundly but having brown eyes has done no damage to my life whatsoever. I don't think anyone else will object to having their eye color change to brown if doing so would also result in the recover of his/her hair.

First of all I do not know for certain that eyelash hair is not sensitive to androgens. It's not a big deal to me but I do think that my eyelash hairs have gotten a tiny bit thinner and shorter since the onset of aga. I agree that some testing has confirmed your point that eyelashes are not androgen sensitive but I do not think there is a large enough body of evidence surrounding that issue as of yet.

Secondly, even if eyelash hairs are not sensitive to androgens the company might be able to overcome the androgen sensitivity issue of scalp hair simply by increasing the dose beyond what is inside of Latisse, which is exactly what I have been suggesting, and which is exactly what the company appears to be doing.

I don't care if a company makes money off of me as long as I get some benefit out of the deal. Your point seems to be that you don't like it that a company will make a profit for regrowing hair for you. I don't know where you live but I live in the USA and in the USA it's OK for companies to make a profit selling customers things that customers want. I have no objection to Allergan making a profit by regrowing hair for me. If you don't want some company to make a profit for regrowing hair for you then just don't buy hair loss treatments and just stay bald instead. Sooner or later a cure is coming and when it gets here you can either pay money to get your hair back or you can stay bald. Those are your choices.

I think of hair in 3 categories:

1. Peach fuzz - it's obvious what this is.

2. Intermediate hairs - hair that is in between peach fuzz and full length/full thickness terminal hairs. When you have aga the hair shaft gets thinner and shorter over time until if finally turns into peach fuzz and then the next step after peach fuzz is shiny bald. Intermediate hairs is when the hair isn't shrunk down to peach fuzz yet but it won't grow beyond a couple inches anymore, it's diameter has shrunk considerably, and some of its' coloration is starting to vanish.

3. Terminal hairs - the best hair.

I think high-dose bimatoprost will be an improvement over minoxidil. I think that only a very small percentage of us see any improvement from minoxidil and I think allergan will give some benefit to a much higher percentage of us. I think it will be beneficial to many more of us than minoxidil is. I do not think it will turn peach fuzz back into full thickness terminal hairs again, but I think it might turn intermediate hairs back into full thickness terminal hairs again.
