Curcumin |
"Curcumin is the main primary component of turmeric, so it’s also sold under that name.
[The] ConsumerLab which is an independent lab that tests supplements [has] done testing on various brands of turmeric/curcumin supplements and discovered that some brands weren’t delivering what they promised. Some didn’t have the amount of curcuminoids they claimed and others were contaminated with lead.
Things to look for when you buy turmeric supplements:
1. Species of turmeric (look for Curcuma longa, although the use of the accepted common name “turmeric” is sufficient to denote this species)
2. Part of the plant used (should be “root” or “rhizome”)
3. Form of turmeric used (e.g., root/rhizome powder or extract)
4. Amount of turmeric per pill or dose in grams (g) or milligrams (mg) [1 gram = 1,000 milligrams]
These are things that are required on the labels by the FDA."

Resveratrol |
First Major Product Review of Potential “Life-Extending” Ingredient
(HealthNewsDigest.com) - WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK — ConsumerLab.com reported today that its tests of supplements containing resveratrol – a compound promoted as “life-extending” -- revealed two products providing only 27% and 58% of their listed amounts of resveratrol. A third product, which boasted several hundred milligrams of a “red wine grape complex,” contained only two milligrams of resveratrol. Several other products contained their listed amounts of resveratrol, although daily doses ranged from just 1 milligram to as much as 1,000 milligrams. None of the products were contaminated with lead or cadmium, which can occur in plant-based supplements.
Resveratrol products have proliferated following reports late last year of life-extending and athletic endurance-enhancing activity in animals. Laboratory research has also shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and other effects. Human studies of its effectiveness have not been reported, but at least one researcher in the field, Dr. David Sinclair at Harvard Medical School, is noted as taking resveratrol personally at a dose of approximately 350 mg per day.
Along with widely ranging dosage suggestions on products, ConsumerLab.com found similar variation in the cost of resveratrol. To obtain 100 mg of resveratrol from any product, the cost ranged from as little as $0.20 to as much as $45.57 – more than a 22,000% difference. Using the lowest cost product that passed ConsumerLab.com’s testing, the daily cost for a dose of 300 to 400 mg would be $0.60 to $0.80 per day. To get that dose from any of the products with single digit milligram amounts of resveratrol would be impractical – requiring hundreds of pills per day and costing as much as $159. For some products, the price difference may reflect the cost of additional ingredients.
“I am not surprised that some resveratrol supplements failed to meet their ingredient claims,” said Tod Cooperman, MD, President of ConsumerLab.com which has tested more than two thousand supplements since 1999. “When an ingredient quickly becomes popular as a supplement, we often see products rush to market that range widely in quality, dose, and price. There is still much to learn about resveratrol. At least now those who choose to use it can find out which products contain what they claim and which do not.”
The ConsumerLab.com report is available at http://www.consumerlab.com/results/resvera...ol_red_wine.asp. It includes findings for nine products selected by ConsumerLab.com as well as four that passed ConsumerLab.com's Voluntary Certification Program. Brands included are French Parad’ox (Arkopharma), Purevinol (Pure Prescriptions), Resvert (Young Again), Resvera-Gold (Douglas Laboratories), Revatrol (Renaissance Health), Transmax (Biotivia), Vinotrol (NeXtten), and Zyflamend (New Chapter), as well as products from Country Life, Jarrow Formulas, Life Extension, Longevinex, and Swanson. The report also provides information regarding the dosage and possible side-effects.

Resveratrol review by ConsumerLab |
"[ConsumerLab] tested 13 brands (not including NOW, RevGenetics, among others).
Found most complied with stated resveratrol content (and most of this ~98%, was trans-resveratrol, apparently), including Jarrow, Biotiva Transmax, Swanson.
Life Extension Foundation 20 mg tabs and Young Again tabs failed- [as they contained] much less [resveratrol than is stated on the their respective bottles]."

"As seen on TV with Barbara Walters! Every capsule of [this] physician strength Resveratrol is equivalent to 35 glasses of red wine, plus healthy, life enhancing red wine polyphenols that will support:
Powerful cardiovascular benefits*
Antioxidant protection against harmful free-radicals*
Longevity, wellness & anti-aging*
No Alcohol - Healthy Vegetarian Capsules!
SOME "RED WINE" SUPPLEMENTS DELIVER LESS RESVERATROL THAN EXPECTED. PureVinol-25 is tested by Consumer Lab as being among

What really matters and what you need to know before you buy is that the Resveratrol supplement in question should clearly state the specific amount of trans-resveratrol.

Curcumin: TumericForce |
According to GiGi's website, antiagingnutritionnews.com:
"I’ve recently joined Consumer Lab which is an independent lab that tests supplements. They’ve done testing on various brands of turmeric/curcumin supplements and discovered that some brands weren’t delivering what they promised. Some didn’t have the amount of curcuminoids they claimed and others were contaminated with lead...Obviously, Consumer Lab did not test ALL turmeric supplements, but one brand that DID pass their testing was: New Chapter's TumericForce."
New Chapter Turmericforce
Dual Extracted Full-Spectrum Turmeric
Researched for maintaining healthy inflammation response*
Maintains healthy cardiovascular and liver function*
World's most important protective botanical
New Chapter has been in love with turmeric for decades. We grow it on our Biodynamic? farm in Costa Rica, which is nestled in the volcanic mountains adjoining the Children's Eternal Rainforest. Turmeric has long been revered as the foundation of an herbal program for health. In India's system of Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been recognized for thousands of years as a key balancing and detoxifying herb. In Indonesia's traditional medical system known as Jamu, turmeric is considered the "Queen" of all herbs, and is the featured daily herb for tens of millions of Indonesians. In Japan and China, people embrace turmeric for its powerful yet safe liver detoxification, and there are societies in Japan where turmeric juice is consumed daily. In the Western medical and herbal traditions, turmeric is considered by many leading scholars to be the most important healing herb on earth.
We at New Chapter agree that turmeric is the world's most important healing herb, and we are proud that Turmericforce is the world's first and only supercritical full-spectrum turmeric extract. We take our full-spectrum turmeric, and without chemical solvents or heat stress, concentrate radiant turmeric oils as much as 200:1. This is combined with a full-spectrum hydroethanolic extract that potency assures it for at least 11% of the full curcuminoid fractions. This is not a mere isolate of standardized turmeric, offering just one or more of the curcuminoids. This is turmeric's full healing glory.*
New Chapter's Supercritical Herbal Extracts
"Supercritical" means Super Purity, Super Potency, Broad Spectrum, and No Chemical Solvents. We take nature's finest herbs and then extract and highly concentrate (as high as 250 to 1) their precious ingredients. We do not isolate out single ingredients or spike our extacts with synthesized additives. We deliver the wisdom of nature, with the complexity and organic nuances of the natural herb preserved for you. In fact, the supercritical process is the gentlest way to extract these delicate plant compounds in a manner to optimally preserve their potency and stability. And when you take
New Chapter's supercritical extracts, neither you, nor the environment, have to contend with chemical solvents.

Tumeric supplements |
WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK — FEBRUARY 6, 2008 — Turmeric supplements have become popular in recent years but ConsumerLab.com warned today that some products contain high amounts of lead. Recent tests found a popular brand to contain 18.7 mcg of lead in a daily serving — the highest amount ever reported by ConsumerLab.com. A daily serving of another brand was contaminated with 8.3 mcg of lead. These amounts are well above those to which people are normally exposed and should be avoided. The State of California, for example, requires supplements with more than 0.5 mcg of lead to carry a warning label. Lead-contaminated products should be particularly avoided by children — who can experience lead toxicity with only 6 mcg per day — and pregnant women.
Interest in turmeric's anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities has propelled sales from just $8 million in 2002 to $32 million in 2006 according to Nutrition Business Journal. Sales growth last year continued to be strong according to SPINSscan. Recent research has focused on compounds in turmeric called curcuminoids and, more specifically, curcumin, which gives turmeric its yellow color. Two products failed to pass ConsumerLab.com's tests because they provided only 11.5% and 49.5%, respectively, of expected curcuminoids. A fifth product did not specify the part of the plant used — a FDA labeling requirement. ConsumerLab.com purchased the supplements from stores, catalogues, and online retailers. All deficiencies were confirmed in a second independent laboratory.
"Consumers should be very careful to select a turmeric product that is not contaminated and provides the expected amount of active compounds," said Tod Cooperman, MD, President of ConsumerLab.com.

be careful with resveratrol, it is not even proven to extend life, and it is not proven to be the active ingredient in red grapes that supposedly is helpful in reducing heart disease
however it is a severe blood thinner, My friend took it, she has occasional problems with her gums bleeding

it was not a high dosage, not sure how much
who says resveratrol is helpful for hair loss. if so it is the vaso dilating effects that will do it, much like rogaine
but hell, niacin B vitamin, has a very similar effect, and will flush your skin red if taken in high amounts, and is much cheaper and more tested than resveratrol
much better a B100 timed release, be careful with Niacin overdosing, 100mcg is enough

Exactly.
Look, I have been taking this combo for over seven months. And it is very good: By this I mean, that I have not lost any more hair, and thinning areas
in the crown and temple have grown thicker. But unlike other herbs and vitamins (especially) that peaked in the first three months, then lost their effectiveness, this resveratrol/curcumin/tocotrienols combo seems to get better with time.
Perhaps rotating in green tea extract and garlinase has also helped .

I visited my family in America a few weeks ago and finally picked up the products I ordered. Shipping is pretty expensive these days. The combo is very good. After just a few days I noticed my hair to be MUCH thicker. I'm excited to see what happens in a few months.
Instead of toco-8, I ordered the toco-sorb by Jarrow Fomulas. I also ordered Resveratro, Curcumin, and Green Tea by Jarrow as well.
One thing I noticed is that it's very important to take these with food. I took them on an empty stomach once and I felt like throwing up. With food they're fine. They also can throw off my balance/coordination a little for some reason so I'm careful how much I take. I only take one pill of each once a day. Sometimes I take them everyother day. They're pretty powerful.

Resveratrol and curcumin are effective for hair loss, according to the study in my signature below AND my personal experience. Why are you trying to argue this point?
From what I have read here and at other forums, DHT blockers, like beta sitosterol have side effects, as Jacob will attest. In addition, they DO lose their effectiveness over time.

Yes, take them with food. I have found that after a meal, I can take TOCO-SORB, resveratrol, and curcumin together, without any problems. I will take other herbs (e.g. garlic, green tea extract) at different times.
Be sure not to take green tea extract before or after consuming dairy products, I read something somewhere about the tea's polyphenols and catechins binding to milk proteins, thus losing their effectiveness .
One pill each, once a day is another plus to this regimen. Economical .

as far as resveratrol being good for hair loss it is an extreme vasodilator much like rogaine, so it might be slightly effective in the early stages , however so are about 100 other treatments, it is easy to get results in the early stages, I did this with only vitamins and minerals no dht blockers.......this was in the first two to three years
try that ten years out see how well it works
I started on my natural dht blockers way further than 10 yrs out and they worked amazingly

first of all if you dont like my tone, get a backbone and some balls, and buck it up bubba, learn to take the heat or get out of the kitchen or dont read my posts
second, just because some post appears doesnt mean its true. We know it takes about 3 seconds to create another nickname and come in and support yourself. as Kramer does. He does the same thing saying beta sis caused man boobs, while he pretends he is widowspeak............a complete farce, swallowed by some board members
I would not put it past you to have several other fake nicks. How many guys ever heard of ORRIBLE? where is he now? DUH. sounds real legitimate , your contention that he got man boobs
btw beta sis is not even a big component of my regimen, i added it three years after i was on saw p , pygeum and nettles. I would say that the regimen works just as well if not better without it
even if it is proven some guy got gyno from natural dht blockers, it means nothing if its just one guy or a few guys. there are some overly sensitive people out there so sensitive to certain chemicals they cannot go out of their house without a bee keepers outfit on.........99.9999 percent of the normal population does not share their sensitivity................so unless you can point to more than ONE POSTER , who has not even been proven not to be a fake nick either...............your argument doesnt hold water

From a post by "perry:"
"Maybe I spelled it wrong. Limbido/libido...whatever. I've seen it spelled both ways.
No I am serious. I'm not the only one who had negative side effects on DHT blockers either. I started taking supplements like pygeum, nettle, beta sisterol, saw palmetto. I tried low doses and I tried lower doses. I omitted beta sis. I still had side effects. I tried them for up to a month, until I could take the fatigue anymore. I tried eating natural souces of DHT blockers like peanuts. Eventually I had the same side effects. DHT blockers just don't work well with my body. I'm sensitive to powerful supplements so I'm not blaming it all on DHT blockers. If they work well for other people, great, but they're not something I care to use internally."
From a post by "orrible:"
"I followed hangins regime after spending time on this forum in early 2005 and reading how naturals didnt give you side effects etc. I took beta sisterol, saw palmetoo & green tea extract in combination. After only 2 weeks i had developed gyne. I stopped the hairloss tabs and took anti estrogens but it didnt resolve. In the end i had surgery. I just thought i would post as i havent visited this forum in awhile and i would have appreciated learning about this before my disaster with naturals.
My link is below. If anybody takes the time to read through it you may see me refered to as stonecold. That was my old username on that forum, but i modified it to orrible to correspond with my hairloss forum username.

It IS tendonitis. I've seen a doctor and had it verified. And it just gets worse. I quit this garbage months ago and the major sites are just as inflamed as they were when I quit. The latest blow is serious tendonitis above the knee, which I've never experienced in my life. Another fine addition is creeping plantar fasciitis in a hitherto unaffected foot, to go with the raging case that currently hobbles the other foot.
The results of this supposedly vitality-preserving wonder supplement? CRIPPLING TENDONITIS AND A FORCED SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE. I can't even enjoy basic sports with my friends, let alone maintain a rigorous exercise regimen to preserve my health and vitality. And for many people who will try this stuff, it comes at the worst possible stage in life, where recovery may be impossible.
I'm not imagining any of this and I'm not ignoring other possible sources of injury.
IT'S A DISASTER. QUIT THIS STUFF NOW.
Sorry about the way this is screwing up your life Stokestack. Everybody has their personal take on this. The salesman wants to sell it, the scientists want reliable studies and evidence on it, folks with your kind of unfortunate experience would just as soon burn it. Myself, I am staying with it unless I get a real stern warning otherwise from my body. So far, I find the benefits outweighing the costs, even though I had to suffer through an attack of shingles and a lot of stinky intestinal gas.
I don't discount your experiences at all, but I also don't discount the other folks who have been quite happy with their own experiences. My inclination at this point is that if rsv causes some problems, that the baby shouldn't necessarily be thrown out with the bath water. Maybe the administration of rsv can be tweaked to ensure that it works more favorably for everyone. For instance, maybe it simply needs to be taken along with one or more other substances that might compensate for possible chemical deficiencies rsv might cause...
I've read that Quercetin and Niacinamide could help since they inhibit some of rsv effects.
a few side effects commonly listed online
* Tendinitis Pain: this has primarily been reported in the Achilles tendon but has also been said to occur in other locations as well.
* Arthritic Joint Pain:suggested to occur with higher doses of resveratrol.
* Stomach Pain & Diarrhea:this is more often found in low quality or 50% resveratrol formulations. The "emodin" content in these formulations is higher then in more pure 99% resveratrol formulations and is known to cause stomach problems.
* Numbness in the Extremities: this has been stated as occurring briefly after consumption and only lasting a few minutes at a time. It has been noted to go away after a few days of use.
* Caffeine Like High: the feeling of being jittery soon after consumption.
* Decreased Appetite: some find this to be a negative while others see it as a positive.

And if you would bother to read my signature, you'd see that the foundation of my regimen is resveratrol AND curcumin, hence the word "combo." Does the word, "curcumin" not appear on your computer screen? My regimen also includes tocotrienols. And I will rotate in green tea and garlic extracts.

tocotrienols are listed on wikipedia as basically vitamin E source]]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tocotrienol
Tocotrienols – together with tocopherols – compose the vitamin E family.
i notice you also avoided the fact that your regimen includes natural dht blockers...........at the same time you say they are dangerous and cause gyno

Learn to count, Hangin': I have one weak "DHT blocker" that I rotate in my regimen; You have FOUR in yours. As I have stated before, you OVERDO it in this area, which Orrible had to learn the hard way. This thread is about tocotrienols, curcumin, and resveratrol, so if I am "promoting" anything, it is these three.
This notwithstanding, I do feel that green tea extract is an important herb for overall health. I think a lot of people would agree with me as well.

"Them"? What them? Again, learn to count, Huckleberry. I take one. And I do not take green tea extract for its minute DHT blocking properties:
"Purine alkaloids are in green tea, which is a big name for caffeine, not to mention theobromine and theophylline, the other ingredients you find in most other teas. The catechins are the important compounds found in the unfermented tea leaves, and the primary ingredients thought to be so helpful for Green Tea. Catechins are known to have several medicinal properties, such as causing vasorelaxation of blood vessels, so that it may help cardiovascular activity. Catechins are also known to inhibit and kill certain bacteria, so it has antibacterial effects. Most importantly, it is the anti-oxidant effects that people seem so enthralled with to help skin wrinkles, aging, energy and stamina, and yes, also hair growth. Green tea is also thought to help and be protective against cancers, such as stomach and colon cancers."

» You might not take it for that , but it does not cancel out the fact it is
» a dht blocker, probably about as potent as saw palemetto or any of the ones
» I take, other than Beta sis , which is very potent
» I am saying it is a DHT inhibitor, a natural one................if natural
» dht blockers cause gyno, you shouldnt be taking them now should you? how do
» you know how powerful of dht blockers each one is.? you dont. so if my
» regimen causes gyno you should avoid herbal dht blockers , and you dont, so
» you are a hypocrite
Again, I am stating that YOUR REGIMEN, which has FOUR DHT blockers, causes "gyno."
» you have seen many post that have used my regimen. I would love to know
» who uses your regimen and is getting good results also. I have asked you
» before to provide a list. Guess you cant find anyone to post
Hangin', your regimen was popular years ago because newbies didn't know any better: They were very desperate. The hair loss community has moved beyond just "blocking DHT" as a means of maintaining or preventing hair loss. What, didn't you get the memo???
Poll the regulars here, and let's see how many are still using your regimen.

I have told you ten times that I think beta sis is not essential and my regimen did just as well if not better without it
guys are not forced to take my regimen , in whole or in part, they are free to choose parts of it , or not take it at all

first of all its one guy.............second how does he know my regimen caused it? third how do you know WHAT part of my regimen caused it, if it caused it?
Fourth , you know nothing, do you know this person? how do you know he is not just a jealous moron like you , trying to disparage my regimen, what proof do you have that he even took my regimen. I can go online and type something, does not mean that it is true

Like I said , if your regimen, YOUR NEW REGIMEN......( old one must not have worked) works so well, the one with the resveratrol, what has it done for you? regrowth? show some pics? or just conveniently avoid that issue.

Yeah right Hangin! You have had beta sitosterol in your regimen for years. In fact, Widowspeak credits you for introducing him to beta sitosterol. You promoted this nightmare of an herb, and now you want to jump ship because things have gone awry...too bad Huckleberry, you got to pay the piper, baby.
Maybe next time you will do some real research before you start actively campaigning for a regimen full of DHT blockers! One word for you: Orrible

Allow me to put it this way, he is more credible than you. He included pictures of the breasts that he developed while on YOUR REGIMEN.
You put pictures of "your" head up, then when Jacob challenged the veractiy of such, you took them down, ran, and hid like a little girl. Put those pictures back up, Hangin'. Orrible still has his link up for everyone to see.
Poll the regulars here, and let's see how many are still using your regimen. Go ahead, Huckleberry.
