ť In order for hair multiplication by follicular cell implantation to be a
ť practical proposition, the number of cells returned to the patient must be
ť significantly greater than the number harvested. Moreover, for this process
ť to be commercially successful and cover the high costs of cell culture,
ť amanufacturing facility must have the capacity to expand the cells of many
ť patients simultaneously. For safety reasons, each culture must be
ť maintained in total isolation from the others to ensure that no
ť cross-contamination can occur between the various patients cells. This has
ť been a long standing issue with organisations involved in tissue
ť engineering, especially those involved in autologous therapies. Three basic
ť approaches have been employed to deal with the issues, and all three will
ť be presented and their advantages and disadvantages discussed. Intercytex
ť is following a strategy based on a robotic cell culture system that was
ť previously developed and proven in the area of high throughput screening.
ť This system uses standard tissue culture vessels and dispensers to feed and
ť passage mammalian cells although they are net yet approved by regulators
ť for use in tissue engineering. The adoption of a robotic system will impact
ť research decisions made early in the development of a cell culture process
ť so that the process will be made robot friendly. The system will be
ť presented and the route to regulatory approval discussed.

ť The implantation of follicular cells, expanded in culture, to induce
ť potentially unlimited amounts of hair has been suggested ever since the
ť work of Oliver and Jahoda. Companies are currently in Phase I and II
ť studies to test preparations of cells for hair induction. It seems from the
ť long history of research in this area that processes will soon be developed
ť to successfully achieve this long sought after treatment. But how will
ť these processes be translated into an industry whereby thousands or
ť hundreds of thousands of people could be treated annually? Tissue
ť Engineering is an industry now in its third decade and over a quarter of a
ť million people have been treated by a variety of cultured cell constructs.
ť The early pioneers developed processes often by trial and error, and only
ť now is best practise beginning to emerge. The lessons learned in the past
ť are crucial to the current development of tissue engineered hair and are
ť the subject of this presentation. All tissue engineering processes can be
ť broken down into six stages: Tissue Procurement; Cell Isolation; Cell
ť Expansion; Assembly; Shipping; and Application. Regulations,
ť industry standards, and developments in other fields are rapidly evolving
ť and influencing each of these stages. The talk will cover these six stages
ť and describe how an industrial process could be developed to meet the
ť commercial needs of large scale follicular cell implantation.
