Dear Doctor,

I am 27 years old, considering a hair transplant in the next year or so. Right now I currently take Proscar and use Minoxidil.

I use to have really curly hair in the front, but most of that has fallen out and I have not grown my hair out in years. I have been losing my hair since I was 17. My Dad and his brother are bald, my brother is balder than me (he's 29), and my grandfather on my dad's side was bald.

I have never taken my going bald very well. I really want to do something about it and do not want to wait years for possible HM. I want to do something about it now. I'm not happy with my appearance. It is either get my hair back, or get a nose job. I'm not happy with the way my head looks bald because of my facial features. My social life has all but disappeared since high school. I'm trying to get my life in order, but it always comes back to how unhappy I am with my appearance.

My pictures below.

GOALS

I would like a procedure that will allow me to wear my hair short if I choose to. I would like to start with my hairline first, then the crown. I would like to do about 1,000 grafts/temple, and eventually 2,000 grafts for my crown. So altogether 4,000 grafts in 2 procedures
over the next 2 years. Depending on the cost, I'm looking at doing my first procedure in Jan or Feb or '08. I would consider traveling to a doctor that fits what I'm looking for.

QUESTIONS

1. Am I a good candidate for hair transplant?

2. Are my goals realistic? How many grafts do you think I need? What kind of result can I expect?

3. I do want the option to be able to wear my hair short, is FUE the only option? What about the triclosure technique? How well does it work with short hair?

4. Do I need to shave any of the donor and recipient area if I am going for FUE?

5. How soon can I return to work without people knowing that I have hair transplant done?

6. Do I need to worry about permanent shock loss?

7. What is the cost, approximately?

8. What about financing? Where can I find more info about financing for hair transplant?

9. Do you recommend that I do everything in one shot or break it up into two procedures? Does it make any difference ?

Thank you.
