Hair Multiplication – University of
Western Sydney, New Player in Hair Multiplication Research ?
Hair follicle neogenesis. We have developed
microsurgical procedures to isolate follicle inductive cells and
culture methods to increase their numbers in vitro. Grafting of
cultured cells to animal recipients have resulted in follicle
neogenesis and hair growth. Our research has reached the
development stage and have identified a commercial partner. The
objective is to use molecular biology, transgenesis and
bioreactor technology to launch cell therapies for hair
replacement in humans.

Hair Multiplication – Cultured
Fibroblast as a Treatment for Hair Loss
Fibroblasts works by stimulating hair
protein production using a patient's own cells. The treatment
begins with the injection of a local anaesthetic to numb a small
section of skin/hair follicles at the back of the head. This
area was chosen because of its genetic print and the
invisibility of any scarring. After approximately six weeks, 1
to 1.5 ml of cultured fibroblasts are sent back to the doctor
for injection into the patient's pate.

Research – Hair Loss Gene Found?
Scientists found that variations in a gene related to male sex
hormones may be at the root of male-pattern baldness, the most

gene, and it dwells on the X chromosome, which all men inherit
from their mothers.

Hair Multiplication – Curis’ New
Treatment for Hair Loss Using Hedgehog Signaling.
”Hedgehog is one of many cell-signaling
pathways that scientists are scrutinizing. And Curis hopes it
will work wonders on thinning pates of both males and females.
When you see a lustrous head of hair, chances are it's at least
partly due to healthy Hedgehog signaling, which prompts the
body's multitalented stem cells to proliferate around follicles,
initiating hair growth. By activating Hedgehog, Curis' drug
targets hair growth at its root, so to speak. That could make
the drug more effective than current treatments, which mainly
aim to increase the size of shrunken hair follicles or to fight
certain hormones involved in hair loss.”

with male pattern baldness. The Phase II trial is planned for
the first half of 2006 and will be performed in both the UK and
North America. A Phase III trial for both male pattern baldness

Hair Multiplication – Association of a polymorphism in the
ornithine decarboxylase gene with male androgenetic alopecia.
”Male pattern baldness is thought to be a polygenic disorder.
Which is to say that there are likely several genes involved in
the development of pattern baldness. In this brand new study,
researches have identified a polymorphism in the ornithine
decarboxylase gene that appears to be associated with MPB. This
is one more piece of the puzzle.”

secondary germ, a biochemically distinct
but functionally equivalent progenitor cell population, at the
termination of catagen” New study by Dr. Costarelis supports
the notion that keratinocytes can “dedifferentiate” to a
stem cell state in response to wounding, perhaps related to
signals from the stem cell niche. Finally, we also present
evidence that quiescent bulge cells undergo apoptosis during
follicle remodeling in catagen, indicating that a subpopulation
of bulge cells is not permanent.

Another update from UWBio on his personal
Hair Multiplication experiement: “I followed Gho's procedure
and I have come to the conclusion that he was not capable of
getting keratinocyte growth either. If you look at the photo's
he includes in his slides and in his article then you can
clearly see that the cells have not even spread out, they are
just circular and not in groups indicating no spread and no
proliferation. I gave up on Gho's procedure and followed a
procedure for isolating skin keratinocytes, but with plucked
hairs.”

Hair Multiplication - “Wnt Signaling
through the ß-Catenin Pathway Is Sufficient to Maintain, but
Not Restore, Anagen-Phase Characteristics of Dermal Papilla
Cells “
Abstract from Investigative Journal of
Dermatology “Dermal papilla cells of the hair follicle can be
maintained in an active, hair-inducing state in vitro when
cocultured with cells secreting Wnt3a. By inducing cultured
dermal papilla cells to secrete Wnt themselves, we demonstrate
that this activity is a direct effect of Wnt signaling to dermal
papilla cells. We further demonstrate that the effects of Wnt3a
are exerted through activation of the ß-catenin signal
transduction pathway and do not require alternative Wnt
transduction cascades. Once dermal papilla cells have lost
hair-inducing properties in vitro, neither treatment with Wnt
nor expression of a truncated and activating form of ß-catenin
is sufficient to restore these properties to the cultured cells.”
