ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

Electrical stimulation is probably the biggest development in hair loss treatment in 1996. Current Technology Corporation in Vancouver, Canada is probably the major force behind studies on treating hair loss based on electrical stimulation of the scalp. Scientific testings and researches have been conducted in US and Canada for almost 10 years. Current Technology Corporation has the worldwide patent for the procedure called ETG (ElectroTrichoGenesis). Worldwide introduction of the treatment began in 1996 in major cities around the world.

The ETG treatment does not generate a lot of publicity in US because Current Technology Corporation does not plan to go through the regulatory bureaucracies and testing required for FDA approval. It does not appear that the treatment will be available in the US in the near future. The nearest place for US residents to obtain the treatment is probably Canada and Mexico.

According to Current Technology Corporation, clinical studies have shown that 96% of the patients who received the treatment have shown cessation of hair loss and/or hair regrowth.

The ETG treatment is an in-clinic treatment where the patient lies comfortably on a specifically designed chair with an evenly distributed electrostatic field administered immediately above his scalp. Weekly treatment is recommended and each session lasts about 12 minutes. The cost for each session is about US $50.

Many companies are leveraging on the studies conducted by Current Technology Corporation and market their own version of electrical stimulation treatments for hair loss. Some require in-clinic treatment while others can be administered at your own home. It is unclear whether they are all backed by the same extent of research and clinical studies as the ETG treatment.
