Merck has a type 1 enzyme inhibitor that they planned to use as the *other* bookend in combo with proscar to treat hair loss. If they had continued studying it then it would've already been available by now. They only stopped studying it because they saw no beneficial affect. However, unlike Bryan I am not sure that they did a long term study using proscar and their type 1 inhibitor to grow hair in balding men. They might not have. They might have decided there was no point once they saw there was no regrowth at all with their type 1 inhibitor by itself.
BTW Sawaya assures me that there is dht from the type 1 enzyme in hair, but that could be systemic - which could play a role in hair loss.
BTW#2 they did find some success with the type 1 enzyme inhibitor for acne and they might be bringing it to market for acne.
