Drugs – Propecia’s Side Effects Less Common Than Originally Expected

In a July 2004 article in Arch Dermatol, over 180 test subjects participated in a study designed to evaluate variations in sexual and erectile function in patients taking 1 mg of finasteride for androgenetic alopecia. The study concluded that “sexual side effects are actually much less common than reported in clinical trials. The sexual function of all patients remained stable during treatment with 1 mg of finasteride.”

All Natural – Laminaria Extract Increases Outer Root Sheath Cell Growth

Recently, stem cells discovered in the bulge region of the outer root sheath (ORS) are found to be able to induce the anagen phase in the hair follicle cycle. In an attempt to research for growth-promoting agents for the ORS cells, some studied the effect of various botanical extracts on the growth of cultured human hair follicles. Among the studies conducted, Laminaria angustata extract was found to be able to increase the ORS cell growth. Further, hair-growth in the shaved skin of C3H mice was also promoted by the topical application of the extract.

All Natural – Oxicell: Liposomes Based Glutathione (GSH) and Superoxide Dismutases (SOD).

Superoxide dismutases (SOD) are enzymes which destroy or neutralize superoxide free radicals and are reported to be beneficial for hairloss. Excellent info on SOD can be found at http://www.phoenixlongevity.com/sod.html.  Glutathione (GSH), on the other hand, is a component of the defense system, synthesized mainly by photosynthesis. Recent study (http://abstracts.aspb.org/pb2003/public/P44/0727.html ) suggest that GSH has an indirect effect on hair root formation via its effect on CPC.

Here’s an excerpt about the new product OXICELL: "OXICELL represents a significant breakthrough in the field of natural medicine, particularly in the area of antioxidant supplementation. OXICELL is a metabolic cream that transports a stabilized form of glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) into the bloodstream via transdermal liposomal delivery methods. The plasma markers of GSH and SOD are not raised when these are supplied orally; therefore, effective transport into the bloodstream via liposomal delivery as found in OXICELL is preferential. The transdermal method of delivery, known as liposomal delivery, is one in which lipid spheres called liposomes surround GSH and SOD, transporting it through the skin until it reaches the blood supply"

All Natural - Protandim to be Released Feb 2005 !

If you believe that anti-oxidants can help fight hairloss, you may want to look into the Feb 2005 release of Protandim. According to the distributor, this product has been demonstrated to decrease oxidation by as much as 60% in humans in just the first 30 days of intake. Protandim is not an antioxidant. It works by inducing the body to produce more of its own natural antioxidant enzymes, eg: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) etc. to fight oxidation. Protandim allows these enzymes to be produced within the cells where oxidative stress actually occurs. This is in contrast to traditional antioxidant supplements which have to pass significant digestive and absorption barriers.

All Natural & Supplements – Beta-sitosterol Now The Most Popular Supplement in the Forum

Lately many in the All Natural & Supplements forum have added Beta-sitosterol to their regimen. Some even reported good results from it. Here’s a brief description about this supplement: “Beta-sitosterol is the active ingredient in saw palmetto berries, which have been used for centuries to treat patients with prostate and urinary problems. The active ingredient in saw palmetto as well as other herbal remedies such as pygeum, stinging nettle, and pumpkin seeds is beta-sitosterol. One capsule usually contains 300mg of beta-sitosterol. You would have to eat 2 lbs. of saw palmetto to get the same amount of beta-sitosterol one 300mg capsule. This is 3000 times more potent than saw palmetto.”.

Some recent comments from people who reported good results with this supplement.

Topical – Shiseido To Introduce New Product Containing ADENOSINE

Leading Japanese cosmetic manufacturer Shiseido announced that it has discovered a hair-growth property called adenosine, one of the in vivo substances that exist in the human body. According to Shiseido, studies have shown that adenosine directly affects hair papillae, a key in hair production; consequently, the output of FGF-7, a hair-growth factor, is increased. The product has received approval as an active ingredient for medicated cosmetics from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Launch date: March 2005.

Topical – Adenosine Responsible for Minoxidil’s Effectiveness as a Hairloss Treatment

Recent studies indicate that the “effect of minoxidil is mediated by adenosine, which triggers intracellular signal transduction via both adenosine A1 and A2 receptors, and that the expression of sulfonylurea receptor 2B in dermal papilla cells might play a role in the production of adenosine.”

Topical – Should Coal Tar Products Carry Cancer Warnings?

Many of us use shampoos formulated with coal tar to treat dandruff and certain scalp inflammatory conditions. There are discussions whether topical treatments containing coal tar are dangerous. There are in fact studies which show that coal tar can cause cancer if applied topically. For example, a study conducted by University Medical Center Nijmegen, The Netherlands suggested that “because of the potential carcinogenicity of coal tar, as clearly demonstrated both in animal studies and from occupational exposure, careful consideration should be given to the use of coal tar preparations in dermatological practice.”

Education – A Comprehensive Look At Hairloss

This is a must read for those who find the forum discussions overly technical. One of our forum members has posted a fairly comprehensive introduction to hairloss. It starts with a basic discussion about testosterone and then followed by a more technical discussion about DHT, physiologic changes in the follicle, minoxidil, programmed cell death, caspase 3, and more. This is a good introduction to terms you hear in the forum quite often, eg: (NF)kappa-B, TGF-B and A etc.

Education – Hair Length & Hair Diameter

Courtesy of TAMGOHL “On a normal head of hair, hairs achieve their maximum diameter when they are at approximately 25% of their eventual length. After they hit their peak thickness, hair shaft diameters decline little by little over the remaining length of the growth phase. Thus, for the vast majority of the growth phase, hairs are actually getting thinner. Also, hair shaft diameter correlates with hair length -- i.e., longer hair is thicker hair.”

Research – Studies Examining the Genetics of Male Pattern Baldness

A study by Wright State University School of Medicine conducted a study to examine the genetics of male pattern baldness. The purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between family history and expression of AGA in a sample of men from the general community. The study concluded that “the probability of male pattern hair loss is dependent on family history and age. Hair loss in a man's father also appears to play an important role in increasing a man's risk of hair loss, either in conjunction with a history of hair loss in the mother or hair loss in the maternal grandfather.”

Research - Info on the TrichoCyte (Hair Multiplication) Trials (Phase 1)

"TrichoCyte is made from a sall sample of scalp tissue from a hairy part of your head. The biopsy is taken under local anaesthetic and can measure approximately 0.5cm2 to 2cm2 in area dependig on your hair density. The skin is processed in the laboratories at Intercytex Ltd to form a suspension of DP cells. The manufacturing process takes approximately 4 weeks. The DP cells will then be injected back into a small balding area on your head (under local anaesthetic).”

Research - Surprising report on human hair cloning comes from China

“Previously unknown group of Dr. Zheng Men from china independently from the more proclaimed scientists and hair transplantation clinics from US and Europe conducted human hair cloning experiments.

They used a technique of combining and transplanting various cell types of the hair follicle from humans to induce new hair growth. This, in principle, it is identical to the methods of hair cloning pursued by Ken Washenik and his colleagues from the Bosley Medical.”
