5 Alpha Reductase Inhibitors
Products that inhibit 5-alpha reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. DHT stands for dehydrotestosterone which many believe is the main cause for androgenetic alopecia.

Propecia / Proscar (finasteride) - The first and only FDA approved hair loss pill in the world. It works by inhibiting type II 5-alpha reductase in the body.

Avodart (Dutasteride) - a new drug that many believe to be more effective than Propecia or Proscar as Avodart inhibits both type I & type II 5 alpha reductase whereas Propecia or Proscar is only effective against type II 5AR.

Anti-androgens
Medications that inhibits the male sex hormones (mostly testosterone) in our body. More commonly prescribed for female pattern baldness. Male patients should exercise caution when using these products.

Aldactone (Spironolactone) - mostly for women.

Diane35 / Dianette / Androcur (cyproterone acetate) - mostly for women.

Hair Growth Stimulant
Medications that some believe to have positive effects in stimulating hair growth.

Loniten - this contains the same active ingredient as the topical treatment Rogaine but in oral form.

Aromatase Inhibitor
Medications that inhibits the enzyme aromatase which is responsible for the production of estrogen in our body. This is mainly used by those worried about feminizing effects of Propecia or Proscar.

Arimidex - mainly used by those worried about feminizing effects of Propecia or Proscar, eg: gynecomastia or development of breast tissues.
