HAIRSITE'S REVIEW
  • Zinc is one of the most common vitamins in the world and yet not too many people are aware that zinc is also a very effective antiandrogens . Antiandrogens are agents that suppress the effects of certain kinds of male hormones and they can be particularly important in treating hair loss.
  • Research has shown that when zinc is used in high concentrations, it reduces or even eliminates DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT is known to be the main cause of male pattern baldness. It is a derivative of the male hormone testosterone and is formed in the presence of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Studies have confirmed that the presence of 5-alpha reductase and DHT in hair follicles of individuals suffering from hair loss.
  • Zinc is already a widely used agent to cure acne by eliminating excessive sebum secretions related to the presence of DHT on our skin. In fact, excessive sebum secretions is also believed to be one of the causes of hair loss. There are theories suggesting that DHT and cholesterol leads to excessive sebum build up on the scalp which eventually clogs the hair follicle. Similar to its application in acne treatment topically, zinc can also be used to treat hair loss by eliminating excessive sebum build up on the scalp.
  • However, it should be noted that zinc has to be used in conjunction with vitamin B6 in order to function as an effective 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.
  • There are very few scientific studies conducted to validate zinc's effectivness as a hair loss treatment. The reason is that pharmaceutical companies do not have a vested interest in conducting the testings. Since zinc is such a widely available vitamin, it is virtually impossible for pharmaceutical companies to patent the compound as a treatment for hair loss.
  • Compared to other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors such as Proscar / Propecia (ie: finasteride), zinc is a lot safer since it is a vitamin and carries no side effects. It is perfectly safe to use zinc in conjunction with other hair growth stimulant such as minoxidil. While finasteride is also a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, it carries side effects such as loss of sex drive and may cause birth defects if used by women.
  • Topical zinc lotions is probably a more effective hair loss treatment than dietary zinc supplements alone. Studies have shown that people who have acne problems tend to have zinc deficiencies in their skin while at the same time have normal levels of zinc in their bloodstreams. Of course , it may be better to combine the two to get maximum results.
