HAIRSITE'S REVIEW
  • Minoxidil is an antihypertensive drug. It has been scientifically proven that minoxidil has positive effects on hair growth when applied topically to the scalp. Minoxidil is marketed as Rogaine ® by Upjohn for the treatment of hair loss. As of to date, Rogaine ® is still the only FDA approved medication for the treatment of hair loss in US.
  • Minoxidil or Rogaine ® is one of the most popular hair loss treatment in the world and hence, we are not going to devote extensive coverage on this drug. You can obtain more details about this drug by contacting Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc. - the manufacturer of Rogaine ® or by contacting us.
  • Minoxidil was originally introduced in the form of a 2% topical lotion available by prescription only. In 1996, 2% minoxidil is available as an over-the-counter drug that can be purchased without a prescription in most local pharmacies
  •

  • The latest development in minoxidil treatment is the "super strength" formula that contain 5% minoxidil in a topical lotion. The "super strength" formula should be widely available in US in late 1998. As of now, many pharmacies in U.S. are beginning to carry the 5% minoxidil lotion. All you need is a prescription from your physician. If you cannot locate a pharmacist near you who sells 5% minoxidil, you may have to obtain the product from overseas or by mail order. Email HairSite@aol.com for details.
  •

  • Not all minoxidil are created equal. It is always a good idea to check out the formulas before purchasing from a pharmacy. In most cases, the formula is prepared by dissolving minoxidil tablets in a combination of alcohol and propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is a kind of solvent that helps the minoxidil tablets dissolve more easily. Because minoxidil is an alcohol based lotion, long term use may result certain skin disorders such as dryness of the scalp, itchiness, flakes and development of rashes and redness etc. As a result, many pharmacies or doctors have begun to slightly alter the formula to reduce skin irritation due to long term use. Some pharmacies or doctors have added anti-inflammatory ingredients and moisturizers into the formula.
  •

  • Also, the minoxidil formula can be prepared based on different kinds of alcohol. The two most commonly used are ethanol and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Some people respond better to ethanol than 70% isopropyl and vice versa. Ethanol is more expensive than 70% isopropyl. Ethanol is almost 100% alcohol and as such a smaller quantity is required to keep minoxidil in solution.
  •

  • There is a misconception that minoxidil is only effective on the crown. The reason is that a majority of the clinical studies are conducted on the crown area of the scalp. Many physicians have noticed that minoxidil is also effective atthe frontal areas.
  •

  • Minoxidil is a lifetime commitment. Any minoxidil induced hair growth will fall off if the treatment is terminated. There are few side effects from using the drug other than some cases of itchiness and redness of the scalp.
  •

  • Ever since the super strength 5% minoxidil has been made available, more and more people are turning away from the traditional 2% formulation. It has been reported that the 5% solution produces much better results with no additional side effects.
  •

  • While minoxidil is known to be a hair growth stimulant, Finasteride is generally regarded as an agent that slows down hair loss. Studies have shown that Finasteride slows down hair loss by inhibiting the enzyme (5-alpha reductase) that converts testosterone into DHT, which is the major causes for hair loss in male pattern baldness. Hair follicles that are sensitive to DHT tend to fall when exposed to the hormone. This is the case for most people who are suffering from male pattern baldness.
  • It appears that Minoxidil and Finasteride work very differently and yet they perfectly complement each other in treating hair loss. Minoxidil alone can stimulate hair regrowth, but it does not necessarily slows down hair loss caused by exposure to DHT. Finasteride alone can stop hair loss caused by exposure to DHT, but it does not stimulate hair regrowth. It is only natural that both Minoxidil and Finasteride are put to use at the same time by many people in treating hair loss.
  • As a result, there are Minoxidil-Finasteride combo topical lotions are now available for hair loss.

I have not regrown any lost hair with 2% minoxidil, however, I continue to use it as I am confident that it has slowed the rate of hair loss. When I stopped using it for a couple months, the amount of hair in the shower was enough to clog up the drain. Yet, when I returned to the minoxidil treatments, the extreme excess shedding halted. I have recently heard about very good results from the 5% minoxidil/finasteride combo. This is said to even grow hair in the frontal hairline for many men. Allegedly many who tried the 2% minoxidil to no avail are now seeing results with the stronger solution and oral finasteride. I just had an on-line consultation with Dr. Lee of Regrowth and he was very informative and I will be starting this new treatment regime next week. I hope to see positive results within 4 months ! I will keep you posted !!

11 years ago I had thinning hair, decided to have hair transplants. It was very painful and results were not fast enough so I read about a permanent hair replacement in New Jersey, it sounded wonderful, wrong ! They sewed a hair piece on your head. It never heals and can become infected. Very bad idea. They were run out of business by the government, but some companies still operate. No matter what kind of procedure or name they call it, do not have anything sewn to your head. Since the pain was so unbearable I cut the sutures out of my head, I then proceeded to go with a hair piece boded on. Not a bad solution. However, activities are limited because it can come off with hard pulling, water sports are limited and no matter what they say , you will be getting tired of trips to the studio for rebounding (every 4-6 weeks). I had it clipped on, basically same as bonding but you can take off and on. This is 11 years later and I have went thru 2 more hair transplant sessions , yes they are painful but this is the only permanent answer.

I am also using 2% minoxidil and Proscar. It has stopped my hair loss and has grown some peach fuzz in 7 1/2 months. If hair loss is a problem, try to live with it, but if you can't , there are options. All pieces are basically the same , all types of bonding are the same, none of them look 100% natural but some do look good. Don't wear thick hair when your are older - a dead giveaway. Style and color do more to look natural than expensive ones does. Go to the mom & pop hair replacement centers, don't pay $2,000 to $3,000 dollars for a hair piece, they only last up to 1 - 2 years anyway no matter what they tell you. Also, you have to keep coloring them (new synthetic hair does show promise), please do not get taken advantage of , ask questions, ask to see their work, most places just want to make a sell , if you won't buy, someone else will, don't get pressured (think and ask)

I feel that rogaine was moderately effective in slowing hair loss, but not hair regrowth or stopping hair loss. Rogaine is also a "greasy" to the scalp and a "pain" to apply.

Proscar has had no efffect on my hair loss in the first four months.

    Thanks

I began really noticing my hair loss when I was 21. I began also a two-year investigation of the industry of hair restoration. I tried a product from Redken called Vivagen. Which claimed not to grow hair just to preserve what you had. That did not work. Then I tried Rogain. I folllowed all there instructions. I applyed it twice a day and massaged my scalp. Rogain is ridiculous. They have a new supposedly product that grows 45% more, plus the minoxidal inside Rogain makes you a lifetime customer. What a business for them and not you. Then I tried systems. I went to several companies. Addhair Technologies, etc.. They tought me that my hair loss was heriditary through this process called Dytestoterone, I believe it is called. That my hair on top was going to fall out regardless of what I did. I could either have a system and pay the monthly maintenance fee, or transplant doner areas around my ears and the back of the head. They said that through transplanting this hair and scalp reduction it would never fall out. So I began to investigate several hair transplant companies from NuHart, PMI Technologies, Sword Medical Group, Bosely, etc... Now the only process that seems to give you the results if you have gotten to a stage 7 or if you have enough doner area is through laser transplanting. The healing process I understand is quicker than the scalpal and more precise. There is all this new terminology such as mico and mini-graphs, but I am still searching for a reasonable and cost effective approach to my hair restoration. Lasergraph is one of the companies I have been in contact with. I hope that this new process of restoration is not a disappointment like the other processes I have tried have been. If you know of any other companies that can assist me in my process of finally finding a cost effective and reasonable approach to my problem please forward it to my e-mail address  Thank You very much.....
