SKIN BIOLOGY AND DR. LOREN PICKART Skin
Biology was founded to develop cosmetic and therapeutic products to improve the health of
skin and hair. The company has developed and continues to develop patented non-drug tissue
regenerative products which aid the body's natural repair system for the treatment of skin
problems in humans and animals.
Skin Biology's products are designed by Dr. Loren Pickart,
President of SBI. Dr. Pickart is one of the world's top designers of innovative and
clinically-proven products for skin and hair. He has received over 140 patents worldwide
including 23 US patents on various inventions to stimulate tissue regeneration.
Prior to entering the biotechnology field, Dr. Pickart conducted research programs over a
period of 25 years on human aging and tissue growth factors. He received a Ph.D in
Biochemistry from the University of California at San Francisco, an institution renowned
for spawning a long line of innovative corporate entities such as Chiron Inc. and
Genentech Inc..
Dr. Pickart's products arose from his basic research on the mechanisms of human aging. In
1973, he discovered Iamin®, a factor in human blood that stimulates cellular viability.
Later research found that Iamin® is generated during skin damage from a skin structural
protein called SPARC. The build up of Iamin® in the area of tissue damage causes an
influx of skin repair cells called macrophages which initiate skin repair mechanisms.
After he started ProCyte Corporation to develop wound treatment drugs, he designed a
series of drugs based on his research discoveries. These have produced a number of FDA
approved products for the treatment of skin wounds and hair transplants such as Iamin Gel
Wound Dressing®, Iamin Impregnated Gauze Dressing®, Iamin Wet Dressing
(copper-saline)®, Iamin-2 Hydrating Gel®, Iamin-Vet® for veterinary uses, and
GraftCyte® for improving the success of hair transplants. C.R. Bard Inc. is marketing the
clinical products for ProCyte. Two other Pickart-designed drugs have recently demonstrated
clinical effectiveness in placebo-controlled clinical trials; Tricomin® for the
stimulation of hair growth and Iamin-IB ® for the healing of intestinal lesions in
persons with chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
In 1991, Dr. Pickart resigned from ProCyte Corporation. He then studied methods to improve
skin health by using non-drug materials. The general idea was to develop a skin cream to
maintain skin health. The prevention of skin irritations or the healing of skin damage at
an early stage (pre-clinical) would reduce the skin complications that so often occur in a
hospital or nursing home. Also, there was a need to find alternatives to the use of
cortisone and other corticosteroids (which damage skin and can produce many other serious
health problems) for the treament of skin irritations.
The goal at SBI Skin Biology has been to develop effective and clinically-proven products
to improve the the health of skin and hair while insuring that the products are
exceptionally safe to use.
Note: Iamin Gel Wound Dressing®, Iamin Impregnated
Gauze Dressing®, Iamin Wet Dressing (copper-saline)®, Iamin-2 Hydrating Gel®,
Iamin-Vet® GraftCyte®, Tricomin® and Iamin-IB ® are products and trademarks of ProCyte
Corporation.
