HAIRSITE'S
REVIEW |
- Folligen® probably helps to fill in areas that are unanswered by minoxidil
(Rogaine®) and finasteride (Propecia®). While minoxidil and finasteride are major
breakthroughs in hair loss treatment, they are by no means the ultimate solution. Indeed,
research has shown that a good portion of the population do not respond to either
minoxidil or finasteride. Also, a majority of those who respond to minoxidil or
finasteride do not have cosmetically noticeable regrowth. This suggests that hair loss
problem is much bigger than minoxidil and finasteride can tackle. Further, while
Propecia® revolutionizes hair loss treatment by being the first FDA approved pill
formulated to inhibit the formation of DHT (a derivative of the male hormone testosterone
that is believed to be the main cause of pattern baldness), some have questioned whether
inhibiting DHT is final answer since there are plenty of people out there who have a high
level of DHT and yet with no signs of hair loss.
- Folligen® tackles the problem by looking at something more fundamental -
the integrity of skin tissues on our scalp. One of the key ingredients in Folligen® is
copper peptide, an agent that has been clinically proven to be extremely effective in
repairing damaged skin cells. In fact, many researchers suggest that scalp inflammation is
one of the leading causes of shrinking hair follicles. For example, Dr. Nasser Razack in
his book Conquering Hair Loss talks about a study conducted by Young et al in 1991 which
substantiated that an inflammatory condition was present in the scalps of 96% of patients
with androgenic alopecia. A similar study was conducted by Abell et al in 1984 which
demonstrated that inflammation was present in 75% of the scalp biopsies obtained from 693
patients with androgenic alopecia. Formulated with an agent that has been proven to repair
skin tissue, Folligen® seems be the logical choice for inflammation induced hair loss.

- Folligen® also sounds like the perfect complement for minoxidil. Since
minoxidil is an alcohol based topical lotion, long-term use tends to have a drying effect
on our scalp, to say the least. I have been using minoxidil for almost 10 years and
speaking from my own experience, I believe that the alcohol in minoxidil hardened my scalp
and caused a lot of flakes. Also, it appears that I do not respond to minoxidil as well as
I used to over time. It is possible that I have become desensitized to the
medication or perhaps the long-term use of alcohol has damaged my scalp tissue which makes
it more difficult for minoxidil to penetrate to the follicles. I have just started using
Folligen® in April 98 and I will share with you my experience.
