ACELL News (Hair Transplant)
|
I spoke to Acell today and asked about a possible July release (as we've already heard) and they confirmed it. They stated that probably next week it will be released for human use. Definately before the end of July.
I again asked them about using it for hair loss. He stated that even though it hasn't been tested for this purpose, they were confident that it would regenerate tissue and hair removed from the donor area. I asked them if the researchers also felt this way and they stated that the researchers are also confident in this.
Furthermore, I asked if it would require any further FDA regulations and they stated that the ACELL matrix would not need any further approvals. As it stands, it is approved for wound closure (which it would be accomplishing with a HT). Basically, all we need to do would be to find a doctor who is willing to try it and go for it. I felt confident (after speaking with them) that it would work........but I don't want to get my hopes up (or anyone elses).
I also asked about expense. I asked if it would raise the price of a conventional HT to a great extent. They said to think in terms of hundred of dollars and not thousands. At this point, it is regulated by insurance codes. Even if it is used for cosmetic surgery (where insurance doesn't cover it) it should not be too expensive.......but I guess that is up to the indidual doctor.
I guess the best thing to do after it is released would be to contact as many doctors as possible and alert them to this. The people at ACELL stated that many doctors aren't knowledgable about their product. That's what I'm going to do.
I don't want to set anyone up for disappointment (including myself) but things may be looking good for us.
Take Care,
Bill

Some Info. about Acell
|
Acell is a company focused on regenerative medicine. It has had products for Vet. medicine for some time now but has been tied up in legal battles for several years which has postponed bringing to market their products used for human usage. The product that Acell has produced is called an extracellular matrix and can be purchased in two forms.......a sheet form and a powder form. Another forum member originally brought this product to the attention of the forum, I'm pretty sure his name was WESB. I was intrigued by the pictures so I contacted the company and found them to be very receptive to discussing their product. Although the Acell matrix was not designed with the purpose of regenerating human hair, it does appear to have the capabilities to do so. When I discussed this with the people at Acell, they felt confident that it would regenerate the TISSUE AND HAIR removed from the donor area.....thus offering a LIMITLESS DONOR SUPPLY. Of course, at this point, it is just in theory. Hopefully, when the product is released for human usage (in the next week or so) a HT doctor will test this theory with positive results. Keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks Bill, so I suppose it doesn't matter whether we are using matrix on fue or strip patients.

FUE or STRIP?
|
» Do I have to do FUE or STRIP in order to use Acell to regenerate the donor?
You should be able to use it on either form of HT. If you use it for FUE, you would probably have to use the powder form. The only problem with the powder form is that of direction. That is, the regenerative capabilities of the extracellular matrix come from the basal membrane which is on one side of the sheet. When it is ground into a powder, it is difficult to be sure that the basal membrane if facing in the correct direction (faced out). It should still be no problem because, on average, enough particles of the basal membrane will be faced in the correct direction to achieve the desired results. (Or at least thats what they said when I spoke to them....I don't claim to be an expert on this stuff so don't take my words as law).

I think strip makes more sense, the holes from fue are so tiny it would be hard to evalute the healing.

thats my thought as well. IF this works it probably will work better for strips. But it will be even the other way around, if it fails for you you will end up with nice thick scar. The wound needs to be left open. Thats how I understand it.

Hi Steve,
I agree with the other guy's posts. Maybe it was approved at an earlier date. They have been held up in court over patent arguements with Purdue for the past 4 years. You can call the company and ask....they seem to be very receptive to phone calls. (Trust me, I have no relationship with this company other than a few phone calls to the same person...I am only HOPING that this stuff works).

I appreciate the input and research (seriously). There are practical issues with a strip being replaced. FUE seems like it wouldn't be practical either.
http://www.acell.com/vetcases/twinkie.html
Take a look at "Twinkie". She went in on March 20th and she is not 100%closed on May 7th. I'm assuming that most people here have jobs since it is a balding website. Who is going to shut down their life for 5+ weeks with this kind of "gunk" wrapped around their noggin.
The other thing is that I can guarantee a human hair follicle is a lot more complex and hard to grow consistently than Fur on an animal. Fur is their skin and while I'm not doubting that it will most likely grow some hair, I seriously doubt it will grow back all the the follicles to their original thickness/density.
I would hope I was proven wrong and want to remain positive about this, but also trying to add a dose of reality as well.

Very interesting.
Unfortunately, I can't see any strip Docs trying this as the downside is that if it doesn't work you'd be left with a strip sized scar, the Doc (at least while doing this trial) would need to be nearby for several weeks to keep an eye on progress etc.
However, I can see SOME trials being done, maybe if...
1) The patient is willing;
2) The Doc is willing;
3) If the patient is only having a small strip, say for example, someone like Bobman who recently had only 5oo grafts taken for temple points. In those circumstances where the patient is only risking a small scar which can be excised if the worst happens, maybe it'll happen then.
The FUE Docs should be all over this, however. If it doesn't work what's the downside? Nothing. If it works.... then okay, money will still be a limiting factor, but then yeah. Then you're looking at unlimited donor!

What about people who are planning to have a strip anyway or like you said, someone who is getting a small strip, I am sure there are doctors and patients who are willing to give this a try especially if the patient is planning to have a strip anyway.
I am curious if this will work on existing strip scar.

I was wondering the same thing. I wouldn't mind gettign another strip surgery if my first one could be cut out as well and rehealed. DOn't know if Drs. even do things like that, but this shows promise.

I agree checkin. I am cautiously optimistic about this product. I am hoping, not guaranteeing that it will work. As far as shutting your life down for several weeks, I would think that if this product is proven to work, many would be willing to do that to get their hair back. Many of us have "shut our lives down" for years.

Yes I also agree. I personally would be happy to do the time to get the desired results. We also must remember that many of the current techniques being used would of once been thought of as crazy to do, so it all starts with great companies like this one atleast having a go and trying something new. Hope they succeed. Imagine if they do. A world with out baldness, how great that would be for us that are cursed with hairloss.
