Praying was last presented on this forum here:

http://www.hairsite.com/hair-loss/forum_entry-id-11140.html

Since then he has undergone received ~5000 grafts beard:Chest hair (4:1) to further consolidate his repair work. The work done is best surmised by the patient in his own words from this post: http://www.hairsite.com/hair-loss/forum_entry-id-21526.html

"Dear fellow fellow-hairsiter friends,
I'm finishing up my week of surgery with Dr. Umar this week. Those who have followed my case know that I'm a victim of the old-punch grafts. In the early 90's (starting when I was only 19yrs old) I had a doctor from New England butcher my scalp and left me with scars, an unsightly appearance, and hardly any growth. I had to wear a hairpiece to go out in public. I'm 36 now, and still wear the hairpiece. My first couple of procedures with Dr. Umar were to create temple points and a temple region, of which I had none. Also, Dr. Umar placed leg hair (some chest hair too) into my ravaged rear scalp (where the old punch grafts were taken). The results were excellent. My temple region and points grew in to my utmost satisfaction and my rear scalp was improved--more of a filler to help camoflauge the large gaps.

For this weeks procedure, Dr. Umar took things further. For my rear scalp area he placed beard hair throughout, so that the results will not act merely as a filler, but provide good density, both actual and cosmetic. Also, Dr. Umar created a hairline that will synch perfectly with his previously created temple region. This hairline was designed with my wish to continue to wear the hairpiece behind it. With the temple points, this hairline will blend and match my temple region perfectly. The decision to design a hairline with the intent of maintaining a hairpiece behind it is not to be taken lightly. Dr. Umar agreed to this strategy as he and I both know that I have no desire to get rid of the piece--unless a scientific breakthrough occurs (hair cloning) or I continue further with body/beard hair to make my bald zone diminish in size. The natural hairline in front of the piece will give me much more confidence, as I will no longer have to worry about how the "fake hairpiece hairline" looks--the front of any hairpiece is the biggest give-away to the obsever. Now I won't have to worry about that anymore. Also, the maintence needed to wear a hairpiece behind my new "real" hairline will make my life much easier--though I'm sure it will take some time to get it right through some trial and error (blending, direction, styling, etc.)."

"Praying": BHT REPAIR, Hairpiece, hairline and temple hair transplant

Nice work. Nice honest video portraying the results.

The hairpiece looks great incorporated with the new hairline, temples, and scar repair in the back.

You can't even tell it's a hair piece if you didn't know it.

I'm sure this man is elated.

"Praying": BHT REPAIR, Hairpiece, hairline and temple hair transplant

Dr. Umar, someone in the hair multiplication forum said he spoke with mr. mannign recently and Mr. Mannign said a doctor recently coated beard hair grafts in ACELL then transplanted on the head. He said the grafts with ACELL grew while the other died and did not grow.

Do you think if this is worth a try using Acell? Perhaps Acell can boost the yield for body hair?

I like the creative and wise approach this patient took. Given his extensive loss and comfort wearing a piece, re-creating a hairline to minimize the roving eyes to an unnatural hairpiece transition will give him some peace. The final product with the piece in place looks natural. Well done.

Temple and donor area look very much improved, I'm particularly impressed by the donor repair. I think that the old punch plug style holes in the back of someones head are much more apparent to the eye than traditional strip scars and the density increase in this area is quite remarkable as beard seems to work really well. Hairline with hairpiece looks really good.

I understand your frustration. I have put a permanent reminder at the top of the forum.

I "think" it is approximately 8000 grafts in total.

Me too, very impressed with the donor repair, did Dr. Umar say how many beard grafts were used in the donor? I don't think he mentioned in the vid.

Beard hair it is, seems like it is the most consistent so far for repairing donor scars.

The design is very specific to his needs, it certainly works very well for him right now. My only concern is what if one day he decides he no longer wants the hair piece, there is no room for plan B, he is stuck with this design.

Consider that you might be right in assuming one day he no longer wants to use a hairpiece, but that could mean a repair session to cover up the work that was done to him (a teenager!) many years ago. He probably only is comfortable with either wearing a hairpiece, or attempting a repair. Shaving ones head for alot of people isnt an option.

I doubt very seriously that he intends on doing anything else in the future other than wearing the hairpiece.

For him he probabaly realizes this is his best option.

It looks amazing, I had tried hairpiece before, it is extremely difficult to blend in your own hair with the fake hair, Dr. Umar made this one look perfect. It will be a challenge though trying to maintain this perfect look all the time, the slightest imperfections will expose the fact that you are wearing a piece.

Beard hair !

This result is excellent and I feel quite sure that Praying's life is much easier and less stressful with his hairpiece maintenance program. I lived with one for almost 14 years and it is very time consuming. As Ixan stated the frontal portion of a hairpiece is by far the most difficult to try and maintain/blend and maintain a sense of natural look without detection.I know with this redesign of his temples/hairline his maintenance program is much less intense than before.

I think the goal for anyone seeking answers to their hair loss whether it be hairpiece /transplant or a combination of each as in this case -is to simply live life with less stress, gain confidence and simply feel better about yourself . We are all out for the same goal. Everyone has their own expectations as to what meets their goal I'm just really glad to see that Praying was able to find a solution to helping him be his best.

Yeh, that struck me as kind of strange and eerie. Everybody complimenting without having a clue as to how many grafts were used- nor was it asked once. Why post results without ANY INFORMATION.

I'm not fond of this result. The beard/neck was extremely unclear as to how it looked post transplant. It's hard to tell from a few feet away and when the camera is getting closer the slide changes to another picture. I'd ask dr umar a few questions, but as many of my questions in the past were ignored, I'd refrain from doing so again.

I have seen better hairline results with photos. To those same people here crying about "wheres the video!!!!!" on other threads, my question to you is "here is a video, but where's the clarity? close up of hairline"?

"how many grafts?" It's right there on YouTube and his website.

"Strange and eerie"?
Seriously? C'mon man.
At least poke around the internet a little before "lobbing bombs" prematurely.
The number of grafts is posted on Dr. Umar's website and YouTube channel in the patient's own words.

What's "strange and eerie" (at best) is the butcher who decimated this patient's donor area.
This is amazing repair work using no head hair whatsoever.

Forget the hairpiece for a second and focus in this patients "traditional" donor area now compared to where he was before.

Here is the patient in his OWN words (cut and pasted from Dr. Umar's website and can be found on Dr. Umar's YouTube page as well):

"I had assumed that I was alost cause. I had given up any hope that my situation could be fixed. About fourteen years ago, starting at the age of nineteen, I underwenta series of hair transplants. This was the early 1990s, and at thetime, many surgeons were still using the large punch grafts—the onesthat produced what is known as the corn row effect. The results werehorrible. I found myself, now in my early twenties, with a disfiguredscalp that could be spotted from fifty yards away. It was the darkestperiod of my life. Anger, shame, and guilt—all of these emotionsdominated my thoughts.

In order for me to re-connect with society, i.e., go to college, hold a job, attend family functions, etc., I realized that I had towear a hairpiece. There was no other choice for me. I bit theproverbial bullet and began having hair glued tomy scalp on a monthlybasis. While this did not solve my problem, it did go a small way inallowing me to do some of the things previously mentioned, albe it witha constant undercurrent of anxiety.

About four years ago, I became aware of body hair transplantationBHT. Since I had a moderate amount of body hair, and had no scalp donorhair left—I followed with interest. I was skeptical at the beginning. However, over time, I observed that BHT was working for many people. Most of these people were in a similar situation to mine—basically nohope; in fact, some of these patients had been told that they werebeyond repair. It soon became apparent to me that there were only aselect few doctors in the world who were truly committed to theadvancement of BHT as a true alternative for people such as myself. DrUmar was among that small group. I spoke with some of his patients. Ifollowed his work on the Internet. He had built a strong reputation ina relatively short time. To make a long story short, I booked anappointment with him. For the first time in many years, I had hope.

As of this writing, it has been about seven months since my firstprocedure with Dr Umar. In total, I have received approximately 4800grafts. Growth became apparent after the four-month mark—much to mydelight. The procedure itself was not painful, and the healing has beenremarkable. I will be able to face this coming summer shirtless, asthere will be no visible signs of surgery. Most importantly, I knowthis: body hair works! Now, I still have a long way to go mind you. Mybaldness is extensive and will require more sessions to accomplishtotal restoration. That is OK. I take comfort in knowing that Imheaded in the right direction. That alone allows me to face the futurewith more confidence and apositive outlook. I am grateful that I wasable to cross paths with Dr Umar. He is a surgeon blessed with the rarecombination of technical skill, artistry, and integrity.

Kudos Doc.
This patient must be very grateful.

Thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands, and thousands.

Oh, my bad. If you go to some clinics that post their photos on this forum you could probably completely restore this case with, say uh, like 3500 grafts.

You're in good company MJ.

I've been deleted, edited and banned on these forums before for going "over the top" when getting into disagreements with fellow posters and moderators but I'm still hanging around.

Just tone down the "rhetoric" and I'm sure your posts will come through.

Are you an HT patient yourself?
Your signature doesn't reveal anything about you so I wonder where your negativity is coming from.

Anonymous "critics" are usually patients from competing clinics.

Few of these "critics" reveal where they are posting from, what their case history is, they don't post pictures and aren't available to meet. Lol.

That's been my experience on these forums.

Ciao.

Beard hair !

Ixan is right that the hairpiece issues can consume one's life . I lived with a hairpiece covering alot of damage/scarring for nearly 14 years before my restoration by Dr Umar. But I think this particular case wasnt a case used to endorse the use of hairpiece and transplant rather a case to present how combining the two can make life much easier if one is already dealing with the difficulties of wearing a hairpiece (detectability- especially the frontal area / daily maintenance issues/etc).

I feel quite sure that Praying's life with his hairpiece maintenance has been dramatically changed for the better with his decision to create a natural front. It looks amazing and he should have gained alot of confidence in the look he has achieved .

Hairpiece is not a bad idea as long as they don't look like a rug on our head, you can always change your mind, come to think of it a hairpiece is probably better than getting a strip, you are stuck with the strip scars for life, no way of undoing the damage.

No doubt there is truth in that statement. I work with a guy who has a hairpiece, it is perhaps not detectable to many people at first glance, and even after realizing that its a hairpiece, its amazing how quickly you forget and even think about that when looking at him, because it looks so good and natural on him. I personally cannot envision the guy being bald. I'm pretty certain that this co worker is not going to quit the use of one anytime soon.

It's not just you, I noticed it as well. No one else seems interested in utilizing this resource. But then again, look at how little FUE is practiced in comparison to strip

I think that you will also be seeing much more of what you see as in Praying's case where beard hair is the first choice after scalp FUE. The beard area is truly an invaluable source especially for those of us who had such large Norwood areas to cover and also the addition of large areas of scarring to deal with. I would almost classify beard hair as a seperate category versus body hair because the expected characteristics/benefit are not the same. Beard hair was not being used at the time of my initial restoration work back in 2005 but individuals can now benefit tremendously from it.

Ok, I think it was Dr. Cooley who said he had tried that and the Acell coated beard grafts grew much better. What about using platelete rich plasma PRP? Dr. Jones, Feller and Greco have all started using the plasma. What do you think if you soak the grafts in PRP before transplanting them to the recipient?

Abcxyz I appreciate the compliment. Yes I'm in that patient testimonial video . I'm the second one with the slight southern accent :-)) Dr Umar has performed an absolute miracle on transforming my hair . I look at my hair every single day and still at times cant believe he could fix the absolute disaster that he started with.(my head was severely scarred) I'm so proud of where I am today and I hope that the others who deal with the physical and emotional toll of hair loss can put it behind them and live life with a bit of freedom. It feels very good. I used to almost literally live in a cave hiding from the world It feels really good to get out of the cave a live a bit.

Heliboy,

Your hair appears to be very natural from the video, it doesn't look like body hair, what if you grew your hair long, will that make any difference? will the hair also appear just as natural? who would have thought, we can put chest hair on our scalp :)

I would be curious to know what it looks like grown out long as well. If it takes on the characteristics of the other hair. Still looks great as is!!

I haven't posted much on the forum lately because hair loss isnt the issue for me as it used to be when I began seraching for answers. I actually owe HairSite a great deal of gratitude because this forum is where I learned of Dr Umar at the time he was beginning his work with body hair. I hope that I cover each of the questions mentioned above:

My history is extensive and well covered through previous post on HairSite. Long story short strip procedures by various M.Ds in the 1990's left my scalp full of pitting/overall failed growth pattern/ and not to put it lightly huge /wide / deep strip scars wrapped from ear to ear. After the failed growth and extensive scarring I then sought out wearing a hairpiece to cover the damage. I wore the hairpiece for almost 14 years until Dr Umar began his work with BHT restoration in 2005.

As far as the surface area Dr Umar has completely restored /lowered my hairline/temples to a great pattern as it appears now- . My entrre scalp in the balding area and the stip scars were covered starting with chest hair -then moving on to leg hair - yes a couple hundred pubic hair for those who like to laugh and make jokes at such / and arm hair. My chest initially provided upwards of 8000+ grafts to begin filling in the necessary areas.

After 3 seperate and very extensive trips to see Dr Umar for seperate phases of work he decided to use some remaining scalp hair (approx. 2000) to redesign my temple/hairline. He wanted to wait until the last phase to use sany scalp hair for the hairline area due to its density /characteristics.

I am personally a big fan as in my case of using both scalp hair where appropriate and body hair as filler hair to achieve results. I will also include beard hair into that equation now that it is such a viable source so closely related to scalp hair (Beard hair wasnt being extracted at the time of my original restoration work in 2005).

My hair as seen in the video is cut very uniform as I like it to a #3 guard on top and no guard on the sides/back. I have let my hair grow out slightly longer but I have a personal favoritism for the short /uniform cut so I choose to keep it that. way. So the BHT /beard hair will grow out - this was seen very closely and up close with the repair patient (Flash )that was in terrible shape. His case was quite remarkable.

One thing to remember and learn - Body hair is best used as filler hair . Beard hair can actually be used now to provide density but essentially the extremity body hair is filler hair. I;ve tried to emphasize the importance of this statement for years so that it doesnt always get compared hair: to hair to scalp hair .When individuals compare body hair to scalp hair it gets demonized and seemingly trashed but that is because BHT's/Beard hair's role is taken out of context. This is something that Dr Umar covers extensively when he is explaining the numbers needed for the entire process. Its so important to understand /comprehend all aspects of any procedure .

The other phase of my work that was equally as difficult and necessary was the scar repair which took up approx 1/3 of my entire graft count.

I hope I answered a couple of the questions. In summary body hair does work in the right skillful hand .Its role has become more increasingly defined as time/experience have been spent with it and seeing actual growth patterns. It is a great option that we did not have in hte past and I am very greatful for it.

Question about characteristics of body hair that I forgot to mention - when body hair grows out remember it has it growth limitations and will only grow so far. The growth cycle is not the same as that of the sclap . The good rule of thumb is' what the hair looks like on your body /beard - is what you can expect no your scalp (with some slight growth potential). As far as the hair blending that has alot to do with the choice/selection of the M.D . In my case the hair is now all one in the same perfoming its job which it does well !!

It's possible that most hair transplants are done right these days so there is really not much of a need for body hair repair, body hair is like a last resort.

The general rule of thumb with body hair is to expect from it essentially only what you see and view it as it exist on the donor area where it is removed. Body hair is really best utilized as 'filler hair' because of its very short growth cycle and overall characteristics . As I mentioned from day one body hair has been unfairly compared to scalp hair in terms of its expectations . It can certainly be used with scalp hair as a combination. Body hair is ' an option' to add to your hair loss battle . Before this the only option we had was scalp hair and when high norwood cases ran our of sufficient donor from scalp there were no other options.

Beard hair (which I personally categorize as a seperate category from body hair) actually can be more comparable to scalp hair in terms of the legnth /density etc . It is the first best viable option after scalp hair if used with scalp hair as a hybrid combination.
